“I remember that it was a particularly hot summer in the city. Three weeks later, in an apartment on the East Side, neighbors were complaining about a foul smell. The landlord went in, and I guess you can imagine what they found. I was called in as the leading detective to investigate the scene. There was the body of a young woman in the bath, she'd been strangled to death and was unrecognizable as the heat had caused her body to bloat up all purple and black. I wouldn't have recognized her, but I saw a photograph on a shelf and realized it was the girl from the parking lot that night. We found her father in his bedroom, he'd hung himself."
